Thayer Summary

Thayer is a small village located in the state of Illinois, in the United States. It is situated in the northern part of the state, in the county of Sangamon. The village is located on the banks of the Sangamon River, and is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Thayer was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Thayer was first settled in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as “Thayer’s Landing”, named after the first settler, John Thayer. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Thayer was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The village also had a number of stores, a hotel, and a post office.
In the early 20th century, Thayer began to decline. The Great Depression hit the village hard, and many of the businesses closed. The population of the village decreased from 1,500 in 1930 to just over 1,000 in 1950.

Geography

Thayer is located at 39°45'25" North, 89°37'45" West (39.7569, -89.6291). The village is situated on the banks of the Sangamon River, and is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The village has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land. The village is located in a rural area, and is surrounded by farmland.
