Tampico Summary
Tampico is a small village located in Whiteside County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Rock River, approximately 25 miles east of the Mississippi River. The population was 1,001 at the 2010 census.
History
Tampico was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after the Mexican port city of Tampico. The first post office was established in 1855. The town was incorporated in 1858.
Tampico was a major stop on the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area, and the town grew rapidly. By the late 19th century, Tampico had become a thriving agricultural center.
Geography
Tampico is located at 41°25'25" North, 89°50'45" West (41.423, -89.846). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.
Economy
Tampico's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a number of small businesses. The town also has a few manufacturing plants, including a plastics factory and a metal fabrication plant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,001 people, 393 households, and 270 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,093.3 people per square mile (422.2/km2). There were 431 housing units at an average density of 472.2 per square mile (182.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 393 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
