Tallula Summary

Tallula is a small village located in Menard County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Sangamon River, approximately 10 miles south of Springfield. The village has a population of approximately 500 people, and is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Tallula was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was named after the daughter of one of the settlers, Tallula Smith. The village was originally a farming community, and the settlers grew corn, wheat, and other crops. The village was also home to a number of small businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith, and a sawmill.
In the late 19th century, the village began to grow and develop. The railroad arrived in 1887, and the village was connected to the larger cities of Springfield and Decatur. This allowed for the growth of industry in the area, and the village became home to a number of factories, including a brickyard, a flour mill, and a furniture factory.

Geography
