Stonington Summary

Stonington is a small village located in Christian County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Stonington was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Stonington, Connecticut. The village was named after the Connecticut town, and the settlers brought with them the same New England style of architecture. The village was incorporated in 1858.

Geography

Stonington is located at 39°45'17" North, 89°20'45" West (39.754722, -89.345833). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy
