Stillman Valley Summary

Stillman Valley is a village located in Ogle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census, up from 1,541 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Rockford, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Stillman Valley was first settled in 1835 by John Stillman, a veteran of the War of 1812. He built a log cabin and began farming the land. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Stillman Valley was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a lumberyard, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The Stillman Valley Bank was established in 1891 and was the first bank in Ogle County.
The village was also home to a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Congregational Church, and the Lutheran Church. The Stillman Valley Public Library was established in 1895.

Stillman Valley is located at 42°11′17″N 89°17′17″W (42.188133, -89.288133). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.02 square miles (2.64 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Stillman Valley is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, a feed mill, and a number of farms. The village is also home to several small businesses, including a hardware store, a grocery store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,541 people, 590 households, and 431 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.0 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 617 housing units at an average density of 617.0 per square mile (238.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.71% White, 0.13% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.13% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.58% of the population.
There were 590 households, out of which 33.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.3% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% were non-families. 24.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $45,000, and the median income for a family was $51,250. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
