St Rose Summary

St. Rose is a small village located in Clinton County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Centralia, Illinois Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

St. Rose was founded in 1854 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The village was named after St. Rose of Lima, the patron saint of Peru. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the village grew slowly over the years. In 1872, the first post office was established, and the village was incorporated in 1875.
In the late 19th century, St. Rose was a thriving agricultural community. The village had a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a saloon, and a school. The village also had a railroad station, which connected it to the rest of the country.
In the early 20th century, St. Rose began to decline. The railroad station closed in the 1920s, and the village's population began to decline. By the 1950s, the village had become a virtual ghost town.

Geography

St. Rose is located at 38°25'25" North, 89°17'45" West (38.423, -89.296). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2), all land.

Economy

St. Rose is a small, rural village with a limited economy. The village is home to a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a restaurant. The village also has a few small manufacturing businesses.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.7/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 763.3 per square mile (294.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $15,945. About 8.3% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
