Somonauk Summary
Somonauk is a village located in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
History
Somonauk was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Somernock" and was later changed to "Somonauk" in 1837. The name is derived from the Potawatomi word for "deep water". The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Somonauk was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a cheese factory, and a canning factory. The village also had a railroad station, which was used to transport goods to and from the village.
Geography
Somonauk is located at 41°30'25" North, 88°37'45" West (41.506944, -88.629167). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
Economy
Somonauk's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat. The village also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.3/km2). There were 735 housing units at an average density of 612.5 per square mile (236.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 10.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,000, and the median income for a family was $56,250. Males had a median income of $41,250 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $20,945.
