Sibley Summary

Sibley is a small village located in Ford County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Paxton–Buckley–Loda Community Unit School District 10.

History

Sibley was founded in 1854 by William Sibley, a farmer from Ohio. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a small village. The village was named after him. The first post office was established in 1856.
In 1858, the first school was built in Sibley. It was a one-room schoolhouse that served the community until it was replaced by a larger school in 1891.
The village was incorporated in 1872. In 1876, the first church was built in Sibley. It was a Methodist church.

Geography

Sibley is located at 40°37′N 88°17′W (40.619, -88.286). According to the 2010 census, Sibley has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Sibley is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms that produce corn, soybeans, and wheat.
The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in Sibley. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 363.3 per square mile (140.4/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
