Shumway Summary

Shumway is a small village located in Effingham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Effingham, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Shumway was founded in 1858 by William Shumway, a farmer from Ohio. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a small village. The village was originally called Shumwayville, but the name was changed to Shumway in 1868.
The village grew slowly over the years, but it was not until the early 1900s that it began to experience significant growth. The arrival of the railroad in 1906 brought new businesses and people to the area. The village was incorporated in 1909 and the first mayor was elected in 1910.
The village continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and by the 2000 census, the population had reached 545.

Geography

Shumway is located at 39°20'25" North, 88°37'45" West (39.340278, -88.629167). It is situated in the southeastern corner of Effingham County, about 10 miles south of the county seat of Effingham.
The village is located in a rural area, with the nearest large city being Decatur, which is about 40 miles to the north. The nearest major highway is Interstate 57, which is about 15 miles to the east.
The terrain around Shumway is mostly flat, with some rolling hills in the area. The village is located in the Kaskaskia River watershed.

The economy of Shumway is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat.
The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. There is also a post office in the village.
