History
Saunemin was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Chief Saunemin of the Potawatomi tribe. The first post office was established in 1856.
In 1867, the Chicago and Alton Railroad built a line through Saunemin, connecting it to the larger cities of Chicago and St. Louis. This allowed the village to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.

Economy
The economy of Saunemin is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, as well as a few small businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 517 people, 206 households, and 140 families residing in the village. The population density was 862.5 people per square mile (333.3/km2). There were 226 housing units at an average density of 376.7 per square mile (145.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.5% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.5% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $48,750. Males had a median income of $35,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945. About 5.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
