Saunemin Summary

Saunemin is a small village located in Livingston County, Illinois, United States. The population was 517 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pontiac Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Saunemin was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Chief Saunemin of the Potawatomi tribe. The first post office was established in 1856.
In 1867, the Chicago and Alton Railroad built a line through Saunemin, connecting it to the larger cities of Chicago and St. Louis. This allowed the village to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.
