Sandwich was founded in 1853 by settlers from Sandwich, Massachusetts. The city was named after the original town in Massachusetts. The first settlers were primarily of English descent, and the city was incorporated in 1864.
In the late 19th century, Sandwich was a major center for the production of agricultural equipment. The city was home to several factories, including the Sandwich Manufacturing Company, which produced threshing machines, and the Sandwich Plow Company, which produced plows.

There were 2,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
