Rutland Summary

Rutland is a small village located in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa–Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Rutland was founded in 1854 by William Rutledge, who was a farmer from Ohio. He purchased the land from the government and began to develop the area. The village was originally called Rutledge, but the name was changed to Rutland in 1856. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Rutland is located at 41°17'25" North, 88°51'45" West (41.290278, -88.862444). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Rutland is a small village with a limited economy. The main industries in the area are agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 218 housing units at an average density of 358.2 per square mile (138.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
