Royal Summary
Royal is a village located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.
History
The area that is now Royal was first settled in the early 1800s by a group of German immigrants. The village was originally known as "Hoffman's Grove" after the first settler, John Hoffman. In 1854, the village was renamed "Royal" after the Royal Hotel, which was built by Hoffman.
The village was incorporated in 1872 and the first mayor was elected in 1873. The village grew steadily throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and by the 1950s, the population had reached 1,000.
Geography
Royal is located at 42°19'25"N 87°51'45"W (42.323750, -87.862490). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,539.2 people per square mile (593.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
