Rock City is a small village located in Stephenson County, Illinois, United States. The village is situated on the banks of the Pecatonica River, approximately 10 miles south of Freeport. The population of Rock City was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Rock City was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the rocky terrain in the area. The first post office was established in 1845. In 1854, the village was incorporated.
In the late 19th century, Rock City was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The village also had a hotel, a bank, and several stores.
In the early 20th century, the village began to decline. The Great Depression caused many businesses to close and the population to decrease. By the 1950s, the village had become a quiet, rural community.
