Riverton Summary

Riverton, Illinois is a small village located in Sangamon County, Illinois. It is situated on the Sangamon River, approximately 10 miles northwest of Springfield, the state capital. The village has a population of approximately 2,500 people and covers an area of 1.2 square miles.

History

The area that is now Riverton was first settled in 1819 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as “Hickory Point” and was later renamed “Riverton” in 1837. The name was chosen to reflect the village’s location on the Sangamon River.
In 1854, the village was incorporated and the first mayor was elected. During the Civil War, Riverton was a stop on the Underground Railroad, providing a safe haven for escaped slaves.
In the late 19th century, Riverton was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The village also had a number of stores, a hotel, and a post office.
In the early 20th century, Riverton experienced a period of growth and development. The village was home to several factories, including a brickyard, a canning factory, and a furniture factory. The village also had a number of churches, a library, and a movie theater.
