Rantoul Summary

Rantoul is a village located in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,941 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Champaign–Urbana metropolitan area.

History

Rantoul was founded in 1854 by Major Robert Rantoul, Jr., a Harvard-educated lawyer from Beverly, Massachusetts. He purchased land in the area and laid out the town, naming it after himself. The village was incorporated in 1856.
Rantoul was a major stop on the Illinois Central Railroad, and the town grew rapidly in the late 19th century. In 1917, the Rantoul National Aviation Center was established as a training base for the U.S. Army Air Service. The base was closed in 1954, but the village has continued to grow and develop.

Geography

Rantoul is located at 40°20'25" North, 88°10'45" West (40.340278, -88.179167). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), all land.

Economy

Rantoul is home to several major employers, including the Rantoul Foods processing plant, the Rantoul National Aviation Center, and the Rantoul Industrial Park. The village also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 12,941 people, 4,845 households, and 3,092 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,183.3 people per square mile (843.7/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 860.3 per square mile (332.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 11.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 5.2% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.7% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,945. About 8.7% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
