Potomac Summary

Potomac, Illinois is a small village located in Vermilion County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Vermilion River, approximately 10 miles south of Danville. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Danville, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Potomac was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from the Potomac River area of Virginia. The village was named after the river in Virginia, and the settlers brought with them the traditions and culture of the area. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the village grew slowly over the years.
In 1872, the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad was built through the village, and this helped to spur growth. The railroad brought new businesses and industries to the area, and the population began to grow. By the early 1900s, Potomac had become a thriving community with a variety of businesses and services.
