Philo Summary

Philo, Illinois is a small village located in Champaign County, Illinois. It is situated in the east-central part of the state, about 25 miles south of the city of Champaign. The village has a population of 1,845 people, according to the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Philo was first settled in 1829 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The village was originally known as “Hog Eye”, but was later renamed Philo in 1837 after Philo White, a local landowner. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.

Geography

Philo is located in east-central Illinois, about 25 miles south of the city of Champaign. The village is situated in the Mahomet River Valley, which is part of the larger Grand Prairie region of Illinois. The village is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland.
