Pearl City Summary

Pearl City is a small village located in Stephenson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Freeport Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Pearl City was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Pearl Creek, which runs through the area. The first post office was established in 1856.
In 1872, the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad built a line through Pearl City, connecting it to Freeport and Chicago. This allowed the village to become a major shipping center for the surrounding area.
In the late 19th century, Pearl City was a popular tourist destination. It was known for its mineral springs, which were believed to have healing properties. The village also had several hotels and resorts, as well as a casino.

Geography

Pearl City is located at 42°20'25" North, 89°37'45" West (42.340278, -89.629167). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

The economy of Pearl City is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops.
The village also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
