Pana Summary

Pana is a city located in Christian County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,614 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Pana was founded in 1855 by William P. Brown, who named the city after his daughter, Pana. The city was incorporated in 1859. The first post office was established in 1856.

Geography

Pana is located at 39°25'25" North, 89°14'17" West (39.423750, -89.237917). According to the 2010 census, Pana has a total area of 4.09 square miles (10.58 km2), of which 4.08 square miles (10.55 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.

Economy

The economy of Pana is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Pana Manufacturing, which produces agricultural equipment, and Pana Tool & Die, which produces automotive parts. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,614 people, 2,310 households, and 1,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,381.2 people per square mile (534.2/km2). There were 2,521 housing units at an average density of 619.2 per square mile (239.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 2,310 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
