Old Shawneetown Summary

Shawneetown is a small town located in Gallatin County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Ohio River, and is the county seat of Gallatin County. The town was founded in 1816 and was named after the Shawnee Indians who once lived in the area. The population of Shawneetown was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Shawneetown was founded in 1816 by William G. Ewing, a surveyor from Kentucky. He named the town after the Shawnee Indians who had once lived in the area. The town was incorporated in 1818 and was the first county seat of Gallatin County.
In 1819, the first courthouse was built in Shawneetown. The town was a major port on the Ohio River and was a major trading center for the region. The town was also a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in the North.
In 1832, the town was destroyed by a major flood. The town was rebuilt and continued to grow. In 1837, the town was again destroyed by a flood, but was again rebuilt.
