Oconee Summary

Oconee is a small village located in Shelby County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Kaskaskia River, approximately 25 miles east of Springfield. The population of Oconee was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Oconee was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The village was named after the Oconee River in Georgia. The first post office was established in 1837 and the first school was built in 1838. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Oconee was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The railroad arrived in 1871, connecting Oconee to the larger cities of Springfield and Decatur.

Geography

Oconee is located at 39°45'25"N 88°51'45"W (39.756944, -88.862500). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all land.

Economy

Oconee's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, and a sawmill. The railroad also provides a source of employment for many of the village's residents.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,072 people, 431 households, and 294 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,183.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 431 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
