Oakford Summary

Oakford is a small village located in Menard County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Oakford was founded in 1854 by William Oakford, a local farmer. The village was originally known as Oakford Station, as it was a stop on the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Oakford is located at 39°59'45"N 89°45'45"W (39.995833, -89.7625). According to the 2010 census, Oakford has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Oakford is a small, rural community with a primarily agricultural economy. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 152 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 218 housing units at an average density of 358.2 per square mile (138.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 22.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845.
