New Canton Summary
Canton, Illinois is a city located in Fulton County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,895 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Fulton County. It is part of the Peoria, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
Canton was founded in 1825 by settlers from New England. The town was named after Canton, Massachusetts, the hometown of one of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1827. The town was incorporated in 1837.
Canton was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many slaves escaping to freedom in Canada. The town was also a major center of the abolitionist movement in the mid-19th century.
Geography
Canton is located at 40°30'25" North, 90°2'25" West (40.506944, -90.040278). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Canton is a major agricultural center in the region, with a variety of crops grown in the area. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Caterpillar, Inc., which has a large plant in the city.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 14,895 people, 5,945 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,811.3 people per square mile (699.7/km2). There were 6,521 housing units at an average density of 790.3 per square mile (305.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 5,945 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
