The area that is now Murrayville was first settled in 1820 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The village was originally known as "Mudville" due to the muddy conditions of the area. In 1837, the name was changed to Murrayville in honor of William Murray, a local landowner.
The village was incorporated in 1867 and has remained relatively unchanged since then. The village has a rich history of farming and industry, with many of the original buildings still standing.

Murrayville is located at 39°45'25" North, 89°37'17" West (39.756944, -89.621389). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all land.

The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
