Mundelein Summary

Mundelein is a village located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. It is a northern suburb of Chicago, located about 30 miles northwest of the city. The population was 31,064 at the 2010 census.

History

Mundelein was first settled in the 1830s by German and Irish immigrants. The village was originally known as Mechanics Grove, and was renamed in 1924 after Peter Mundelein, the first Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago. The village was incorporated in 1909.

Geography

Mundelein is located at 42°17'45" North, 88°00'45" West (42.295833, -88.0125). According to the 2010 census, Mundelein has a total area of 8.9 square miles, of which 8.8 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

Economy

Mundelein is home to several large employers, including the Abbott Laboratories, Medline Industries, and the University of St. Mary of the Lake. The village also has a thriving retail sector, with several shopping centers and malls.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 31,064 people, 10,945 households, and 8,072 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,521.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 5.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 8.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.3% of the population.
