Morton Grove Summary

Morton Grove is a village located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is a suburb of Chicago, located approximately 15 miles northwest of the city's downtown. The population was 23,270 at the 2010 census, making it the 23rd largest municipality in Illinois.

History

Morton Grove was first settled in the 1830s by German immigrants. The village was named after Levi Parsons Morton, a former United States vice president and ambassador to France. The village was incorporated in December 1895.
In the early 20th century, Morton Grove was a farming community. The village was known for its production of celery, which was shipped to markets in Chicago. The village also had a large German population, and many of the residents were of German descent.

Geography

Morton Grove is located at 42°2'17" North, 87°47'17" West (42.038, -87.788). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 5.14 square miles, of which 5.12 square miles is land and 0.02 square miles is water.

Economy

Morton Grove is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The village is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the Morton Grove Pharmaceuticals, a major pharmaceutical company.

As of the 2010 census, there were 23,270 people, 8,945 households, and 6,072 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,541.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 74.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 11.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.2% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.

About 4.2% of families and 5.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
