Morrison Summary

Morrison is a city located in Whiteside County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,188 at the 2010 census, up from 3,845 in 2000. It is the county seat of Whiteside County.

History

Morrison was founded in 1855 by William and Mary Morrison, who had moved to the area from Ohio. The Morrisons named the town after themselves. The first post office was established in 1856. The town was incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Morrison was a major center for the production of agricultural implements. The town was also home to a number of other industries, including a brickyard, a flour mill, a furniture factory, and a canning factory.

Geography

Morrison is located at 41°45'25" North, 89°59'45" West (41.756944, -89.995833). According to the 2010 census, Morrison has a total area of 2.45 square miles (6.34 km2), all land.

Economy

Morrison's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to a number of agricultural implement manufacturers, including John Deere, Case IH, and New Holland. Other industries in the area include food processing, metal fabrication, and plastics manufacturing.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,845 people, 1,619 households, and 1,039 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,569.2 people per square mile (605.7/km2). There were 1,717 housing units at an average density of 699.2 per square mile (270.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.90% White, 0.18% African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.47% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.36% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population.
There were 1,619 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 31.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
