Monroe Center Summary

Monroe Center is a small unincorporated community located in Ogle County, Illinois. It is situated in the northern part of the state, about 25 miles west of Rockford. The population of Monroe Center was estimated to be around 500 in 2020.

History

Monroe Center was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York. The town was named after James Monroe, the fifth president of the United States. The first post office was established in 1837 and the first school was built in 1845.
In the late 19th century, Monroe Center was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a creamery, a cheese factory, and a canning factory. The town also had a hotel, a bank, a blacksmith shop, and several stores.
In the early 20th century, the town began to decline as the railroad bypassed it. The population decreased and many of the businesses closed.
