Meredosia Summary

Meredosia is a small village located in Morgan County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Illinois River, approximately 20 miles south of Jacksonville. The population was 590 at the 2010 census.

History

Meredosia was founded in 1836 by William Meredosia, a former soldier in the War of 1812. He purchased the land from the federal government and named the village after himself. The village was incorporated in 1867.
Meredosia was a thriving river port in the 19th century, with steamboats regularly stopping at the village to transport goods and passengers. The village was also home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a brickyard, and a distillery.
In the early 20th century, the village began to decline as the river trade shifted to larger cities. The Great Depression further weakened the local economy, and the population began to decline.

Meredosia is located at 39°51'45" North, 90°17'45" West (39.8624, -90.2958). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all land.
The village is situated on the banks of the Illinois River, approximately 20 miles south of Jacksonville. The river provides a variety of recreational opportunities, including fishing, boating, and swimming.

Economy

Meredosia’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several grain elevators, as well as a number of small businesses.
The village is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics plant, a metal fabrication plant, and a food processing plant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 590 people, 246 households, and 166 families residing in the village. The population density was 983.3 people per square mile. There were 270 housing units at an average density of 450.0 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 246 households, out of which 28.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
