Melvin Summary

Melvin, Illinois is a small village located in Ford County, Illinois. It is situated in the eastern part of the state, about 25 miles south of Champaign and about 50 miles north of Bloomington. The village has a population of approximately 500 people and is part of the Paxton-Buckley-Loda Community Unit School District.

History

The village of Melvin was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlers were led by William Melvin, who was a veteran of the War of 1812. The village was originally called “Melvin’s Station” and was located on the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, the village was a thriving agricultural community. It was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a cheese factory. The village also had a hotel, a bank, a post office, and several stores.
In the early 20th century, the village began to decline. The railroad was abandoned in the 1920s and the grain elevators and other businesses closed. The population of the village decreased from a peak of about 800 in the early 1900s to about 500 in the 2000s.

Melvin is located in the eastern part of Ford County, Illinois. It is situated about 25 miles south of Champaign and about 50 miles north of Bloomington.
