History

Mason was founded in 1837 by William Mason, a settler from New York. The village was incorporated in 1867.
Mason was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1863. The Battle of Mason was fought between Union and Confederate forces, and resulted in a Union victory.

Economy

Mason is a small, rural community with a primarily agricultural economy. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 517.2 per square mile (199.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.3% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
