Marshall Summary

Marshall, Illinois is a city located in Clark County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,846 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. Marshall is located in the heart of Central Illinois, approximately 25 miles east of the state capital of Springfield.

History

Marshall was founded in 1835 by William and Mary Marshall, who were among the first settlers in the area. The city was named after the Marshalls, and the first post office was established in 1837. The city was incorporated in 1839.
In the late 19th century, Marshall was a major railroad hub, with the Chicago and Alton Railroad, the Wabash Railroad, and the Illinois Central Railroad all having lines that passed through the city.
