Manhattan Summary

Manhattan, Illinois is a small village located in Will County, Illinois, United States. The village is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Chicago and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Manhattan was 4,530.

History

The area that is now Manhattan was first settled in the 1830s by German immigrants. The village was originally known as “Newburg” and was later renamed “Manhattan” in 1867. The name was chosen to honor the city of Manhattan, New York. The village was officially incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Manhattan is located at 41°25'17" North, 87°54'45" West (41.4214, -87.9125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.2 square miles, all of which is land.

Economy

Manhattan’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The village is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a printing company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,530 people, 1,717 households, and 1,213 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,072.7 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 2.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $54,917, and the median income for a family was $63,958. Males had a median income of $45,938 versus $30,917 for females. The per capita income for the village was $24,945. About 4.2% of families and 5.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
