Malden Summary

Malden is a small village located in Bureau County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Ottawa–Streator Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Malden was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Malden, Massachusetts. The first post office was established in 1855.

Geography

Malden is located at 41°17′N 89°25′W (41.28, -89.41). According to the 2010 census, Malden has a total area of 0.45 square miles (1.17 km2), all land.

Economy

Malden's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,213.2 people per square mile (468.3/km2). There were 224 housing units at an average density of 498.3 per square mile (192.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.18% White, 0.18% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, and 0.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who were 65 years of age or older.
