Loraine Summary

Loraine, Illinois is a small village located in Adams County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 25 miles south of Quincy. The village has a population of just over 500 people, and is part of the Quincy, IL-MO Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Loraine was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The village was named after Loraine, Ohio, the hometown of the settlers. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Loraine was a thriving river port. The village was home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. The village also had a post office, a school, and a church.
In the early 20th century, Loraine began to decline. The river port was no longer needed, and the businesses began to close. The population of the village began to decline as well. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 200 people.

Geography

Loraine is located in Adams County, Illinois. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, approximately 25 miles south of Quincy. The village is located in a rural area, and is surrounded by farmland.
