Long Point Summary

Long Point is a small village located in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The village is situated on the banks of the Vermilion River, approximately 25 miles southwest of the city of Chicago. The population of Long Point was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Long Point was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as “Long Point Settlement” and was located on the banks of the Vermilion River. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its fertile soil and abundant wildlife. The village was officially incorporated in 1854 and was named after the long point of land that jutted out into the Vermilion River.
In the late 19th century, Long Point was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard. The village also had a post office, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.
In the early 20th century, Long Point began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away to larger cities in search of better job opportunities. The village was also affected by the Great Depression, which caused many of its businesses to close.

Geography

Long Point is located at 41°17'25" North, 88°45'45" West (41.290278, -88.762500). The village is situated on the banks of the Vermilion River, approximately 25 miles southwest of the city of Chicago.
The village has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of which is land. The terrain is mostly flat with some rolling hills. The climate is humid continental, with hot summers and cold winters.
