Lisle Summary

Lisle is a village located in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,182 at the 2010 census, and in 2019 the estimated population was 22,935. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor. It is also the headquarters of the Morton Arboretum.

History

The area around Lisle was first settled in 1832 by James C. Hatch, who came from New York. He purchased a large tract of land and named it “Lisle” after his hometown in New York. The area was mostly farmland until the 1950s, when the population began to grow rapidly due to the construction of the East-West Tollway (now Interstate 88). The village was incorporated in 1956.

Geography

Lisle is located at 41°47'17" North, 88°05'45" West (41.7881, -88.0958). According to the 2010 census, Lisle has a total area of 6.02 square miles (15.6 km2), of which 5.99 square miles (15.5 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water.

Economy

Lisle is home to several large corporations, including Navistar International, Molex, and Tellabs. The village is also home to the corporate headquarters of the Morton Arboretum, a 1,700-acre (6.9 km2) public garden and research center.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 21,182 people, 8,717 households, and 5,717 families residing in the village. The population density was 3,521.3 people per square mile (1,364.2/km2). There were 9,072 housing units at an average density of 1,515.2 per square mile (584.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 79.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 9.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.2% of the population.
There were 8,717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $68,945, and the median income for a family was $83,945. Males had a median income of $60,945 versus $41,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $33,945. About 2.7% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
