Lincoln, Illinois is a city located in Logan County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,504 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Logan County. Lincoln is home to two colleges, Lincoln College and Lincoln Christian University.

History

Lincoln was founded in 1853 by settlers from the New England area. The city was named after Abraham Lincoln, who was a lawyer in the area at the time. The city was incorporated in 1856.
In the late 19th century, Lincoln was a major stop on the Chicago and Alton Railroad. The city was also home to a number of manufacturing plants, including a brickyard, a furniture factory, and a canning factory.
In the early 20th century, Lincoln was a major center for the production of agricultural equipment. The city was also home to a number of automobile dealerships.

Geography

Lincoln is located at 40°11′N 89°24′W (40.1833, -89.4003). According to the 2010 census, Lincoln has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.1 km2), of which 8.8 square miles (22.8 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 14,504 people, 5,845 households, and 3,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,637.2 people per square mile (631.2/km2). There were 6,323 housing units at an average density of 714.3 per square mile (275.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 19.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,921, and the median income for a family was $45,945. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
