Lerna is located at 39°37'45" North, 88°20'45" West (39.629167, -88.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.5 km2), all of it land.
History
Lerna was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The village was named after the Greek mythological figure Lerna, a many-headed monster. The village was incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Lerna was a thriving agricultural community. The village had a post office, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a school, and a church. The village also had a railroad station, which was used to transport goods and passengers to and from the nearby towns of Mattoon and Charleston.

The economy of Lerna is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The village also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a restaurant.
