Lerna Summary

Lerna is a small village located in Coles County, Illinois, United States. The population was estimated to be around 200 people in 2000. The village is located in the eastern part of the county, about 8 miles south of Mattoon and 8 miles north of Charleston.

Geography

Lerna is located at 39°37'45" North, 88°20'45" West (39.629167, -88.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.2 square miles (0.5 km2), all of it land.

History

Lerna was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The village was named after the Greek mythological figure Lerna, a many-headed monster. The village was incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Lerna was a thriving agricultural community. The village had a post office, a general store, a blacksmith shop, a school, and a church. The village also had a railroad station, which was used to transport goods and passengers to and from the nearby towns of Mattoon and Charleston.

Economy

The economy of Lerna is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The village also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 200 people, 79 households, and 57 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,037.2 people per square mile (400.3/km2). There were 84 housing units at an average density of 428.2 per square mile (164.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.50% White, 0.50% African American, 0.50% Native American, and 0.50% from two or more races.
There were 79 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 24.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 males.
