LaSalle Summary

LaSalle is a city located in LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Ottawa-Peru, IL Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 9,609 at the 2010 census, and was estimated to be 9,541 by July 2019. LaSalle is the county seat of LaSalle County and is located at the intersection of Interstate 39 and U.S. Route 6.

History

The area that is now LaSalle was first settled in 1837 by French-Canadian fur trader Louis Jolliet and his son, Jacques. The city was named after the explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, who explored the area in 1679. The city was incorporated in 1852.
In the late 19th century, LaSalle was a major railroad hub, with several railroads passing through the city. The city was also home to several manufacturing plants, including the LaSalle and Bureau County Railroad, the LaSalle Car Company, and the LaSalle Steel Company.

Geography

LaSalle is located at 41°19'25"N 89°7'25"W (41.323750, -89.123611). According to the 2010 census, LaSalle has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), of which 5.8 square miles (15.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

LaSalle's economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several manufacturing plants, including the LaSalle and Bureau County Railroad, the LaSalle Car Company, and the LaSalle Steel Company. The city is also home to several agricultural businesses, including the LaSalle County Farm Bureau, the LaSalle County Soil and Water Conservation District, and the LaSalle County Farm Bureau.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 9,609 people, 3,845 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,639.2 people per square mile (631.2/km2). There were 4,093 housing units at an average density of 699.3 per square mile (269.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,938. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $18,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
