Kingston Summary

Kingston is a small village located in DeKalb County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Kishwaukee River, about 25 miles west of Chicago. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Kingston was first settled in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as Kingston Station, named after the nearby railroad station. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Kingston was a major center for the production of agricultural implements. The village was also home to a number of factories, including a brickyard, a flour mill, a sawmill, and a furniture factory.

Geography

Kingston is located at 41°55'25" North, 88°45'45" West (41.923750, -88.762501). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles, all land.

Economy

The economy of Kingston is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to a number of farms, including dairy, beef, and grain farms. The village also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,039.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
