Kinderhook Summary

Kinderhook is a small village located in Pike County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Illinois River, approximately 30 miles south of Springfield. The population of Kinderhook was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Kinderhook was founded in 1835 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the Kinderhook Reformed Church in New York, which was the home church of many of the settlers. The village was incorporated in 1837.
Kinderhook was an important stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the settlers being abolitionists. The village was also a major stop on the Illinois Central Railroad, which connected Chicago to Cairo, Illinois.

Geography

Kinderhook is located at 39°45'25" North, 90°37'45" West (39.756944, -90.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Kinderhook's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 663.2 per square mile (256.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.54% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races.
