Jacksonville, Illinois is a city located in Morgan County, Illinois, United States. It is the county seat of Morgan County and is located along the Illinois River. The population of Jacksonville was 19,446 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Morgan County.

History

Jacksonville was founded in 1825 by European-American settlers. The city was named after Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States. The city was incorporated in 1833 and was the first city in Morgan County.
In the early 19th century, Jacksonville was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, a network of secret routes and safe houses used by African-American slaves to escape to freedom in the North. The city was also home to the first public school in Illinois, which was established in 1829.

Geography

Jacksonville is located at 39°45'25" North, 90°17'45" West (39.756944, -90.295833). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.1 km2), of which 8.8 square miles (22.8 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Economy

Jacksonville is home to several major employers, including Passavant Area Hospital, Illinois College, and the Morgan County government. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Caterpillar, Inc., which has a large manufacturing facility in the city.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 19,446 people, 7,845 households, and 4,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,190.3 people per square mile (845.3/km2). There were 8,845 housing units at an average density of 1,000.3 per square mile (386.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 7,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 11.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 88.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,813, and the median income for a family was $45,919. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,845. About 8.7% of families and 11.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
