Island Lake Summary

Island Lake is a village located in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,717 at the 2010 census. It is located approximately 40 miles northwest of Chicago.

History

The area that is now Island Lake was first settled in the 1830s by settlers from New England. The first settler was a man named William H. White, who arrived in 1836. He was followed by other settlers from New England, including the families of William and Mary White, John and Mary White, and John and Sarah White.
The village was originally known as White's Settlement, and was later renamed Island Lake. The name was chosen because of the many small islands in the lake.

In 1872 the village was incorporated as a village The first mayor was William H White

According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 4.9 square miles, of which 4.8 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.

As of the 2010 census, there were 8,717 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,811.2 people per square mile. There were 3,309 housing units at an average density of 683.2 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the village was 87.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $60,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $22,945.
