Hume Summary

Hume is a small village located in Vermilion County, Illinois, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Danville, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Hume was founded in 1854 by William Hume, a Scottish immigrant. He purchased the land from the government and began to develop the area. The village was originally called Hume's Station, but the name was changed to Hume in 1858. The village was incorporated in 1872.
Hume was a stop on the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railroad, which ran from Chicago to St. Louis. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the village. The railroad brought in new businesses and people, and the village grew rapidly.

Geography

Hume is located at 40°14'25" North, 87°45'45" West (40.240278, -87.7625). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Hume's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The village also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 377.5 per square mile (145.9/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
