Humboldt Summary

Humboldt, Illinois is a small town located in the northern part of the state, in the county of McDonough. It is situated on the banks of the Mississippi River, and is home to a population of just over 1,000 people. The town was founded in 1837, and has a rich history of industry and agriculture.

History

Humboldt was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Kentucky. The town was named after Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist and explorer. The settlers were attracted to the area due to its fertile soil and abundant natural resources. The town quickly grew, and by the mid-1800s, it was a thriving agricultural and industrial center. The town was home to several mills, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a gristmill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.
In the late 1800s, the town began to decline due to the decline of the local industries. The town was hit hard by the Great Depression, and many of the businesses closed. However, the town was able to survive, and in the 1950s, it began to experience a resurgence.
