Herscher is a village located in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kankakee-Bradley Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Herscher was founded in 1854 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The village was named after a local family, the Herschers. The first post office was established in 1856. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Herscher is located at 41°14'25" North, 88°7'25" West (41.240278, -88.123611). According to the 2010 census, Herscher has a total area of 1.14 square miles, all land.

Economy

Herscher is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village also has a post office and a library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 690 households, and 517 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,619.2 people per square mile (624.2/km²). There were 717 housing units at an average density of 631.2 per square mile (243.3/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.11% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.60% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.60% of the population.
There were 690 households out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.7% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.15.
In the village, the population was spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
