Hartsburg Summary

Hartsburg is a small village located in Logan County, Illinois, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Sangamon River, approximately 10 miles south of Lincoln. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Hartsburg was founded in 1854 by William Hart, a local farmer. The village was named after him and was incorporated in 1858. The first post office was established in 1855.
In the late 19th century, Hartsburg was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a sawmill, and a grist mill.

Geography

Hartsburg is located at 40°14'25"N 89°25'45"W (40.240278, -89.429167). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Economy

Hartsburg's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a restaurant, and a hardware store.
