History
Hartsburg was founded in 1854 by William Hart, a local farmer. The village was named after him and was incorporated in 1858. The first post office was established in 1855.
In the late 19th century, Hartsburg was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a sawmill, and a grist mill.
Geography
Hartsburg is located at 40°14'25"N 89°25'45"W (40.240278, -89.429167). According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.
Economy
Hartsburg's economy is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The village also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a restaurant, and a hardware store.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 545 people, 206 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 221 housing units at an average density of 363.3 per square mile (140.5/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 206 households, out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.1% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $21,250 for females.
