Hamel Summary

Hamel is a small village located in Madison County, Illinois, United States. It is situated in the southwestern part of the county, about 10 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri. The population of Hamel was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Hamel is located at 38°51'25" North, 89°51'45" West (38.856944, -89.862500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

History

Hamel was founded in 1854 by German immigrants who had come to the area from Pennsylvania. The village was named after the German city of Hameln, which is the home of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Economy

Hamel is a small, rural community with a primarily agricultural economy. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village also has a post office and a bank.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 654.3 per square mile (252.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
